Selecting an ISO Consultant
Using an ISO consultant to assist in your implementation of ISO 9000 could save your company a lot time and effort. Selecting a consultant that is right for your organization is a very important process. Many factors need to be taken into account.
The size of your organization will determine if you need a consulting firm that has multiple consultants that can work simultaneously or a single consultant that works independently.
The advantages of working with bigger firms are the resources they can provide. On the other hand the cost may be more reasonable for services provided by a single consultant that does not carry the overhead of a bigger firm.
You may receive more consistency and continuity from a local consultant that does not travel every other day to a different firm.
Factors to consider:
-
your resource requirements
-
consultant experience
-
consultant familiarity with your industry
-
consultant availability
-
backup if not available
-
personality / works well with your organization
Your choice will depend on the internal resources and skill level of your organization.
How can a consultant help?
A consultant can be used for any part of your
implementation. From assisting in documenting your
process to training of your employees. Some of the
typical areas for using consultant:
These are some of the most productive uses of an
ISO Consultant.
How can a consultant hurt yout ISO management system?
ISO Consultants like are used to an authoritative approach, most consultants are. Even though they may have seen a lot of different systems every system is as unique as people are in general. When a consultant uses a cookie-cutter approach you know you are going in the wrong direction. Make sure that the individual you work with has a lot of experience in your industry. They may introduce you to other tools and techniques accross other indudtries as well. Here are some don'ts of selecting ISO Consultant:
-Don't take their word as gospel. You know your people best, if they tell you to do something that you know will not work ask for different approach.
-Don't accept "it has to be done this way", ISO standards are not prescriptive. They tell you what you need to do, not how it needs to be done.
-Don't accept a consultant on his /or her words. Verify credentials, get their resumee and call previous clients to see how their experience was with the consultant. Do, what you would do, when hiring any employee, because you are hiring them, even if it is for a short period of time.
Once the consultant is gone you are on your own and your oranization will depend on you. You want an ISO consultant that will help you become an ISO Consultant for your organization.
